Originally released in 1992 by a very young OSMOSE, at the beginning of what many hold as the label’s “classic years,” PAN-THY-MONIUM was formed by scene legend Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Nightingale, Bloodbath) and members of Ophthalamia to indulge in – and push ever further – the most bizarre and avant-garde boundaries of death metal. An opening track that’s over 20 minutes long, saxophone freakouts, wordless vocals, constantly shape-shifting song structures full of swampy riffing and careening blastbeats…everything but the kitchen sink goes into Dawn of Dreams. Although it caused confusion upon its original release, the album later became a cult classic with my underground fanatics and other weirdos, especially fans of Swanö’s vast body of work. Experience it again (or for the first time) and blow your mind!

Few active bands embody the authentic spirit of black metal as convincingly as Belgium’s Perverted Ceremony. Beginning with its 2016 “Demo I” and later punctuated in 2017 with the debut full-length, “Sabbat of Behezaël,” Perverted Ceremony has proven that the most effective music in this subgenre is that which emphasizes an aura of vileness and evil over the sterility that often results from modern recording and production techniques. It is in part this approach that has led to comparisons between Perverted Ceremony and some of the most respected names in black metal, with a particular resemblance to the Finnish tradition promulgated by such revered cults as Beherit and Barathrum. Although such high praise would be expected from the label charged with releasing the band’s work, it is substantiated by the fact that both the demo and album have already sold out multiple pressings over the course of the past year.

Ulvmonddomānen stands on a crescent sound constant linking the old world to primordial forces and transformation, clothed in the shadows of the damned ancient shrines that once served in the wheel of the mystical world. This garment is constituted beyond the nocturnal veil of the lunar forces and traditional mythology, the diabolical appearance of the sacred mirrors of the underworld and the cathartic transformation of the Being into the fiery beast, dominated by the venomous intellect and the perpetual cold of distant lands. Each of the hymns-legends has an auræs of old grimoires haunted by the sinister veil of the fullmoon whispers, wrapped by a completely different revelations and much more complex devilish orchestration than the beginnings of “Stronghold of Majestic Ruins” a refined but powerful setting that highlights the glorious reflections of the time of past hordes. Ulvmonddomānen will be the next arcane appearance of the colossal cenotaph carved under the majestic immemorial realms.
