Terrific magical alliance between two of the best hordes in the Raw Black Metal underground in the last couple years.
The Canadian maniacs in Starcave Nebula deliver a long track of blistering, ultra-lo-fi, acidic and psychotropic Improv Raw Black Metal mayhem, with askew, mind-warping riffage, and pummeling drum performance that absolutely annihilates and demolishes your ribcage .
Trhä’s first two songs offer some of their most orthodox release to date, following a more traditional approach.
Trhä still never by any means loses its magical character, otherwordly atmosphere or spirit.
These tracks follow more along the line of the “Mã Héshiva…” and “Vat gëlénva!!!” albums, with influences from bands such as Mütiilation, Mystic Forest or Manierisme.
The third track however features again a more fairytale atmosphere, with the addition of the pop-ish, upbeat synthesizers that appear in “Tálcunnana…” or “Endlhëdëhaj…”

Still, fueled by this fire they may be, the Italians across this mini manage to maximize their epic side, with the predecessor’s flat-yet-full soundfield now becoming slightly more chromatic in the process. Lead lines portend dark truths, ever building in tension and then grandeur, but the record’s swift-yet-satisfying runtime reveals the darkest, most intrinsic truth: black metal doesn’t need to “become” anything when it already IS. Lunar Spells is a Greek black metal band formed in Athens in 2020, by Cryptic (guitar, vocals, synths), K.C.H (bass) and V.T (drums). Both musically and lyrically, Lunar Spells stays close to the roots of Scandinavian “old school” black metal. Lyrical subjects thus often deal with darkness, depression, misanthropy and hate. After their first EP recording Medieval Shadows from an Ancient Netherworld (2020), the line-up was augmented by Atxak on vocals, and the group recorded their debut full length album Where Silence Whispers.

Already in the early days „The Stars Are Dead Now“ was advanced with two additional tracks, followed by multiple re-issues showcasing the interest in this recording. However, the record always kept its tense character making it the perfect soundtrack for dreary days. The release comprises of seven titles, one as a fully instrumental ambient track („The Old Ghost In The Well“), and all lyrics and music were solely done by G.B., giving this band and release a rather unparalleled sound. Undoubtedly „The Stars Are Dead Now“ must be considered a true must-have for those involved in a more ambient-rooted kind of black metal and the sounds of isolation.
