Skalf è un progetto musicale creato nel 2020 da due membri di Umbra Noctis, extreme metal band attiva dal 2005. La loro musica si distingue per un sound a nostro avviso piuttosto particolare, influenzato tanto dal black metal atmosferico quanto dal death/doom degli anni novanta, con un tocco quasi heavy, che si percepisce in particolare negli assoli di chitarra.
Il monicker “Skalf” deriva del nome dialettale della Val di Scalve (àl de Scàlf), vallata montana delle Orobie cui siamo molto legati; questo progetto è (e sarà sempre) focalizzato sulle vicende avvenute, raccontate e tramandate in quella terra. “Vallis Decia” è un concept sul disastro del Gleno, tragedia colposa di cui quest’anno si celebra il centenario.

While largely within the wider umbrella of black metal, RVBBERVVITCH’s unique expression nevertheless evades easy categorization – nor easy consumption. Guitars are harsh and cold, yet seemingly summoned from a post-apocalyptic crater rather than an amp; bass tones are mercilessly overdriven, grinding body and soul into the dirt; cutting out humanity altogether, both blastbeats and doomy stomps pump like pus from a Midi drum-machine; and sinister echoing soundscapes meld with malodorous French vocals, which demonically range heavily distorted screeches to low-pitched grunts. And whereas so many nowadays “black metal” bands play-act, the creator of RVBBERVVITCH matches content with form, life with art: the unconventional, largely taboo visual imagery is a reflection of the artist’s unabashedly hedonistic lifestyle.

Wampyric Rites is evoked from his deep sleep in the anno MMXIX by three ghostly entities inside the desolate dungeons covered by the dust of time and drinking from the chalice the ecstasy of the ancient spirit of Black Metal and Old School Dungeon Synth resulting in his first work called Demo I.
The nocturnal entity drinks the ecstasy of the dark mysteries of the night under the icy mantle that covers the sinister fog. The different spells that have been captured in different manifestations have been consecrated: Demo / EP and Split the same ones that have been recorded in the classic Lo-Fi form, with the dark passion and devotion to the sinister art of the evil tyrants Belongs to the Pure Raw Underground Black Metal Plague Circle.

Graveland’s style has changed from raw black metal on the early albums to a more epic sound which is inspired by Hammerheart-era Bathory. Lyrically, on the early works Rob Darken was inspired by Celtic beliefs, now he’s Wotanism-orientated and calls his music “epic pagan metal”.

Eight songs across 37 minutes are more than sufficient to paint the atmospheres and sensations that seemingly exist out of time. The album’s no less raw nor polished than it needs to be; rather, it IS, unyielding and undying.
