Through spectral melodies, a tapestry of darkness and abyssal cold, this split takes us into a journey to unearth the primal essence of both band’s craft: raw Black Metal in the crudest form, relentless, primeval, portraying Black Metal in its most unadulterated and primal state. It harks back to the roots of the genre, where raw emotion and unfiltered expression were the driving forces behind the music.

Black Metal

Without initially even putting out any form of demo, BORKNAGAR’s first and by now “cult” self-titled album was recorded at Bergen’s legendary Grieghallen Studios for the underground label Malicious Records from Germany, who released it in 1996. Next to Øystein G. Brun, “Borknagar” featured the likes of Garm (Ulver, ex Arcturus) doing the vocals, drummer Grim (ex-Immortal, Gorgoroth and Ancient), Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved) on keyboards and bassist Infernus (who played in Gorgoroth). The overall press reaction was extremely positive, with media and fans alike praising the highly original and fresh approach of the group.

Black Metal

Bohemia’s BRAN are a power-trio of ancient black metal might and majesty. To be sure, they exhibit the splendorous, spellbinding riff-sorcery so endemic to their country’s black metal idiom, but instead of hypnotizing monochromaticism, BRAN’s epic constructions are always unfolding, always blossoming with a strict sense of narrative flow, surprising and engaging at every turn. Indeed, their Odcházení debut is a march across rarefied lands, for not only does it retain palatably clear production, rendering their ruminations in their most powerful state, but there’s a pronounced grounding in actual METAL here – but thankfully, without any goofy party posturing or “metal brotherhood” bollocks.
