  • Perverted Ceremony (BEL) – Perverted Ceremony LP 25.88

    Black Metal

Few active bands embody the authentic spirit of black metal as convincingly as Belgium’s Perverted Ceremony. Beginning with its 2016 “Demo I” and later punctuated in 2017 with the debut full-length, “Sabbat of Behezaël,” Perverted Ceremony has proven that the most effective music in this subgenre is that which emphasizes an aura of vileness and evil over the sterility that often results from modern recording and production techniques. It is in part this approach that has led to comparisons between Perverted Ceremony and some of the most respected names in black metal, with a particular resemblance to the Finnish tradition promulgated by such revered cults as Beherit and Barathrum. Although such high praise would be expected from the label charged with releasing the band’s work, it is substantiated by the fact that both the demo and album have already sold out multiple pressings over the course of the past year.

  • Perverted Ceremony (BEL) – Sabbat of Behezaël LP 24.88

    Black Metal

A mere matter of months since it released its first official recording, “Demo I,” Perverted Ceremony returns with its uniquely abominable variety of black metal, hereby presenting its debut full-length album, “Sabbat of Behezaël,” under the very same banner of Nuclear War Now! First discovered by NWN! through the time-honored underground tradition of the band spreading self-produced cassettes to a limited number of contacts, Perverted Ceremony’s music reflects the same authenticity and dedication to their craft as their original manner of clandestine distribution. Although the band lists such revered acts as Demoncy, Mystifier, Von, Blasphemy, Profanatica, Archgoat, and Beherit, as their primary influences, their sound tends to gravitate somewhat more towards the latter two (along with Barathrum), who represent the Finnish tradition of bestial black metal. That said, Perverted Ceremony’s style is not easily compartmentalized according to their influences. On the contrary, with their distinctive approach to songwriting, production, and atmosphere, they have achieved a ritualistic blend of black metal that is unique unto itself. Additionally, Perverted Ceremony has proven with this album that the work recorded on its demo, which was already impressive in its own right, was only a snapshot in the band’s development, and one which has now been superseded.

  • Profane Order (CAN) – One Nightmare Unto Another LP 25.88

    Black Metal

Thundering forth with frenzied intensity, Montreal’s Profane Order return with their second full-length, ‘One Nightmare Unto Another’. From its first moments, the record summons merciless blackened death metal soaked in the old blood of the 90’s trailblazers. The band’s first release with Nuclear War Now!, this latest release features seven tracks of rapid-fire aggression and bestial hostility.

Incubating slowly as the plague months passed, ‘One Nightmare Unto Another’’ reveals a rearmed and retaliatory variant of the group. Pared down to a maniac core of two members, ILLUSORY (Spectral Wound) and OLCADÓIR (Skumstrike) invoke the dark gods of ancient black and death metal. Fans of Blasphemy, Demoncy, Beherit and the wildest excesses of Slayer will find fresh meat to feast on amid the record’s barbaric purity.

After 25 years of activity, StarGazer has firmly established itself as one of the most enduring Black/Death bands in the Australian extreme metal scene. And although they have remained continuously productive during the last quarter-century, their output is sparse, owing to the band’s meticulous approach to writing and recording. Consequently, the release of every StarGazer album is a momentous event. Recorded during the early stages of the Great Reset, “Psychic Secretions” is just the fourth full-length album in the StarGazer catalog and comes six years after their last album, the brilliant “A Merging to the Boundless.

  • Syphilitic Vaginas (JPN) – Complete Studio Collection DLP 34.88

    Black / Speed Metal

Although Syphilitic Vaginas has produced two full-length albums in its thirteen-year history, it is probably most recognized for the much more prolific number of EPs and split recordings that it has released during that time. Five of the earliest of these recordings, along with eight previously-unreleased tracks, were first compiled and released in 2008 on CD format by Rescued from Life Records in a collection entitled “Complete Studio Recordings.” This same compilation of destructive metal punk mayhem is now hereby released for the first time on vinyl DLP format, courtesy of Nuclear War Now! Productions. These thirty-five tracks perfectly distill into a single release Syphilitic Vagina’s dedication to a blend of sleazy and decadent sinvocations that rival those of the Japanese masters that the band admires most. Achieving a rare feat of being both raw in nature and incredibly precise in execution, the riffs are catchy and memorable without losing any of their undeniable virulence. Meanwhile, the demented vocals beckon one to commit unforgivably perverse pleasures of the flesh, as the bass and drums churn away as the maelstrom at the epicenter of the storm that harnesses its fury and drives it forward. Whereas the full-length album is typically seen as the standard by which a band’s worth is measured, “Complete Studio Recordings,” as a series of snapshots in a band’s early trajectory, reminds us of the potency that can be achieved in the more focused and abbreviated format of the EP and split, but only when the artist itself is up to the task. In the case of Syphilitic Vaginas, this prerequisite is satisfied in spades.

  • Varathron (GRE) – Walpurgisnacht LP 26.88

    Black Metal

Beginning in the early 1990s, a handful of musicians in Greece established one of the most distinctive and compelling regional sounds associated with the Second Wave of Black Metal. Rotting Christ laid the foundation for this particular sound, and other acts immediately followed suit helping to define the Greek Black Metal sound and bring it to prominence within the international scene. The importance of Varathron’s contribution cannot be overstated. After releasing what is arguably the greatest Greek Black Metal album of all time, 1993’s “His Majesty at the Swamp,” Varathron recorded and released the superb follow-up, “Walpurgisnacht” two years later. Since that time, the overwhelming brilliance of the former has often overshadowed the fact that “Walpurgisnacht” is a classic album in its own right. From the outset, with the opening track, “Tleilaxu (The Unborn Child),” it is clear that “Walpurgisnacht” contains all of the characteristic traits of Greek Black Metal. The riffs are somber and melancholy, yet driven by a sense of mania, often suddenly giving way to slower, majestic passages firmly set in the Hellenic tradition. Reminiscent of the early recordings of Monumentum, on “Walpurgisnacht,” Varathron skillfully weave into the fabric of the album a slightly gothic influence producing an unearthly effect in which transient, morose interludes and subtle keyboard flourishes accentuate the album’s mystical feel.
