  • Merzbow (JPN) – Magnesia Nova DLP 34.88

    Noise

Merzbow stands as the most important artist in noise music. The moniker of Japanese artist Masami Akita was born in Tokyo in 1979. Inspired by dadaism and surrealism, Akita took the name for his project from German artist Kurt Schwitters’s pre-war architectural assemblage The Cathedral of Erotic Misery or Merzbau. Working in his home, he quickly gained notoriety as a purveyor of a musical genre composed solely of pure, unadulterated noise. Embracing technology and the machine, first in an absolutely analog way and then welcoming digital innovation, Merzbow broke boundaries and pushed toward new territories of the extreme, arriving at a sonic space of uncontaminated, straight noise that, from its base in Tokyo, has continued, now for over 40 years, to set the pace for the entire genre of noise.
Exquisitely recorded and mixed between February and May 1995 at ZSF Produkt Studio, Masami Akita’s home studio from the late 80s to late 90s, Magnesia Nova is stunning immersion into the world of Merzbow during one of the project’s most engrossing and important period. Inspired by the intersections between Greece and Japan and between Western and Eastern civilization along with work of Athanasius Kircher (all of the track titles have been taken from Kircher’s works ), is a true blasts of noise, meticulously crafted into gorgeous sound collages.
For the first time that this seminal document from Merzbow’s ’90s period has ever appeared on vinyl, in double LP, featuring last side of second LP with 20 minutes of unreleased bonus track took from the same period of the recording sessions. Like all of his work since the early nineties, Magnesia Nova is an uncompromising cascade of brutal noise. In this album you find nothing of the minimalism of his early 80s, completely overwhelmed by synthesizers and handmade objects that become his unconventional weapons to create bursts of noise.

After two excellent demos the Australian solo-project returns with an equally captivating debut album. Mastermind The Seer calls his music Sombre Romantic Black Metal, while we prefer the label Neoclassical Necro Synth for its unique combination of raw vocals and the dominant piano that makes Midnight Betrothed something totally outstanding in today’s scene. If you are a sucker for dark romanticism and want something altogether different that probably hasn’t been done in this fashion before, Midnight Betrothed may be the band for you.

  • Mightiest (DEU) / Depressive Silence (DEU) – The Recreation of the Shadowlands / Depressive Silence DLP 38.88

    Black Metal / Dungeon Synth

The veterans Mightiest, hailing from Freiburg, or rather from the western Black Forest, are not known to everyone. The guys from Mightiest have been involved in the black metal underground since the early 90s. With “The Recreation of the Shadowlands” a melodic black metal masterpiece accompanied by ambient/dungeon synth elements was created. There are epic moments in the guitar riffs that cast a spell and bring out the darkest chambers of your soul.

Depressive Silence enjoy a much larger fan base, especially since many of their releases served as a precursor and source of inspiration for countless dungeon synth projects (of course not only) and still serve to this day. Even then, RAL and B.S. had a preference for theatrical, melancholic and dreamy keyboard sounds

  • Minenwerfer (USA) ‎– Alpenpässe MARBLE DLP 30.88

    Black Metal

Since their formation in 2007, MINENWERFER have pursued a proud ‘n’ pure vision of black metal idiosyncratically focused on World War I – idiosyncratic, in the sense that the band hail from America but mostly sing in German. What has resulted is a startlingly accomplished canon that has quietly built itself into prolific proportions, with their first album arriving in 2010, followed by albums in 2012 and 2019, and a slew of split releases and EPs in the interim.

That third album, Alpenpässe, is arguably MINENWERFER’s grandest work yet. While seven years separated it from its full-length predecessor, Nihilistischen, the payoff was well worth it: its six songs in nearly an hour are towers of incomparable might. Everything here is free and flowing, with the bountifully rising/falling melodies pulling at the listener’s heartstrings and casting an ominous (and eminently playable) spell that simply needs to be experienced to be believed. This is MINENWERFER at their most powerful and poignant.

Of those many short-length releases, Der Rote Kampfflieger is the oldest and perhaps most curious. Here, MINENWERFER offered the new track “Ace of Aces,” the reworked “Albatros in Flammen,” and two very surprising covers: deep martial industrial artist Striider’s “Schüzengraben” and legendary shredder Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s early scorcher “I am a Viking.” MINENWERFER for sure have their own identifiable sound.
