Depressive Silence was founded by RAL & B.S. from Mightiest in 1994. The band is one of the cult acts and forerunners of the Dungeon Synth genre alongside Mortiis and Jim Kirkwood.
Back then, the genre wasn’t even called Dungeon Synth yet, and only later got that monicker, probably named after Mortiis’ label Dark Dungeon Music. At first it was just Dark Ambient. Nonetheless it was already something special in that it combined elements from Black Metal (more visually and thematically rather than musically) and fantasy into a new style that appealed to some Black Metal fans as well as those who preferred keyboard music and role playing games. Once the name Dungeon Synth had been established the appeal to (Black) Metal fans became much greater and the genre really took off, with Depressive Silence as one of the most beloved and well known bands of this rapidly growing genre.

Hailing from Finland, while EMBRYONIC SLUMBER may be a brand-new entity in name, the duo are longtime veterans of the underground: VARGRAV / DRUADAN FOREST mainman V-Khaoz and Hellwind Inferion, an incredibly prolific drummer but more recently known as the vocalist for both Sargeist and Desolate Shrine. And while what they create together as EMBRYONIC SLUMBER may show slight shades of their collective pasts, the resulting recording – the full-length In Worship Our Blood is Buried, the band’s bolt-from-the-blue debut – handily transcends comparisons altogether.

RUTTOKOSMOS are one of the great “what if?”s of Finnish black metal. The band formed sometime in 2003 and released the five-song Ja minä näin kuoleman demo in 2006 and then the six-song Kärsimys demo a year later. Afterward, nothing was heard from RUTTOKOSMOS ever again. Only one member concurrently played in Divina Inferis, and the other two members either disappeared and played pseudonymously in other bands.

Building upon that grand fortress is a four-song/22-minute mini-album likewise truly titled: The Oath of the Black Wolf. Here, ORGREL have gone a-hunting, their ’90s black metal classicism stalking and striking with a hunger only hinted at previously. Still, fueled by this fire they may be, the Italians across this mini manage to maximize their epic side, with the predecessor’s flat-yet-full soundfield now becoming slightly more chromatic in the process. Lead lines portend dark truths, ever building in tension and then grandeur, but the record’s swift-yet-satisfying runtime reveals the darkest, most intrinsic truth: black metal doesn’t need to “become” anything when it already IS. Burier IV – Wielding Malignity – an auditory altar, forged to conjure a series of surreal, blood drenched nightmares, permeated by abstract and otherworldly expressions of rage, pain, and horror.
Originally planned in concept as 7″ format, the material overflowed and the result is a 12 track 40min full length release.
Recorded at the end of the Australian summer MMXX, Burier IV is comprised of tracks that are short in length and aggressive in nature, bursting forth with a sharpened edge.
Burier IV could be considered a conceptual anomaly, yet is undeniably congruous with the Burier catalog of recordings so far, employing similar palettes of darkly coloured, complex instrumentation and tortured, shrieking vocals, dynamically pulsating, here wielded with a heightened sense of ferocity.
