Another piece of German Black Metal history from 1998, this time again from Bergthron. The first EP “Uralte Gedanken” with its almost 20 minutes playing time differs a bit from the first album in terms of atmosphere, but we are still accompanied by cheesy synthesizers and acoustic melodies. The warriors have awakened and leave the depths of the forest to shed blood in honor for Wotan. The philosophy about pagan beliefs is still in the vein of Bergthon, but their war spirit is much more dominant on this release than ever before. Presumably this release paved the way for future non-conventional Black Metal releases like “Jagdheim” e.g. which sound far more progressive and divide the minds.

After 2019’s well-received Endless Trails demo via SIGNAL REX, HOLLOW WOODS strike with a full-length debut fittingly titled Cold Winds Cleave the Earth. While hailing from Finland, this mysterious entity largely eschew their homeland’s reigning black metal idiom, instead taking influence from Ukraine (Roman Saenko’s projects), Norway (early Ulver, equally early Gorgoroth), and especially Russia (the Blazebirth Hall collective). This album falls nothing short of pure audible chaos and insanity forcing the listener to become engulfed in the pure darkness of the void so they become an active participant in the rituals manifested through Glemt. Therefore this is more of a pact between the void and the forbidden, leaving no room for light or hope for all life.
This album was manifested through the will of tormented spirits that made themselves know through Magick and communication with the deceased. This, therefore, opens forth the Left-Hand Path and the bleak passageway into the utter blackness of deaths abyss past the point of no return, so that all forbidden truths are relieved.
