TRELLDOM are the brainchild of Kristian Eivind Espedal, who is better known under his artist’s name Gaahl. The Norwegian became one of the leading figures of the Nordic black metal scene after joining the notorious Bergen outfit GORGOROTH in 1998. For many years, the vocalist was pigeonholed for his extreme vocals and attracted many, often dark rumours about his person. If any notion is true about Espedal, it is to always expect the unexpected. TRELLDOM have already written black metal history.

TROLLDOM is a name that goes back many years. While the band’s date of origin is unknown, the first demo, Av gudablod röd…, was released in 2016. That TROLLDOM played authentically vintage second-wave black metal should hardly be surprising considering it came under the banner of Ancient Records linchpin Swartadauþuz (Azelisassath, Bekëth Nexëhmü, Muvitium, Greve, MUSMAHHU, Digerdöden, Gnipahålan, Mystik, Summum, Daudadagr). Back then, his rabidly prolific nature was just starting to blossom, and TROLLDOM was yet another new-yet-old creation that contributed to his wider cosmology whilst standing on its own.

Norwegian act Ulver rose to prominence from a more black metal-rooted background in their early years, to becoming widely known for high-calibre soundscapes and exquisite experimental and electronic art as part of their continual and ever-shifting evolution.
With a penchant for folklore-laced black metal in their formative years, and with what could be considered even then to be eclectic and unconventional compositions compared to the more raw and primitive offerings from other arising acts in the scene at the time, Ulver made a big mark on the genre since their formation in the early 90s, spawning a unique and celebrated trilogy of early works which arrived in quick succession, starting with their monumental 1995 debut, ‘Bergtatt’, before the more serene acoustic-driven experience of ‘Kveldssanger’ the following year, and completed by the more feral and ferocious outpouring of ‘Nattens Madrigal’ in 1997.
