Founded in 1997 in the Swiss region of Bern, black metal solo-project PAYSAGE D’HIVER remained a strictly underground phenomenon at first. Mastermind Wintherr unleashed a steady stream of 10 full-length so-called “demos” and 4 split-EPs that earned him an excellent reputation and large following When the Swiss came “out of hiding” with “Im Wald” (“In the Forest”) in 2020, his regular debut album even entered the German charts underscoring the organically achieved status. Each full-length release, including the so-called “demos” and regular albums, constitutes a chapter of a continuing story, which PAYSAGE D’HIVER narrate about a protagonist called “Der Wanderer”, who roams an otherworld realm. In “Geister”, the Wanderer has a lucid dream in which he meets beings from another dimension, which is in fact our world. To him, we terrestrials appear as the ghosts. Our only means of contacting the Wanderer in the world of PAYSAGE D’HIVER is through the rites of winter, such as the Tschäggättä, which is a traditional mask cult from the Lötschental, a valley in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. Such a hereditary mask is depicted on the album cover and the lyrics are set in the local dialect.

Paysage D’Hiver’s double album “Im Wald” was recently released and immediately became a favorite among both fans and critics. Now Wintherr offers us an addendum in the shape of the EP “Im Traum”, which contains two album songs as re-imagined versions.

“In my inner ear,” the Swiss artist explains, “I heard deeper levels of music when recording ‘Le Rêve Lucide’ and ‘Kaelteschauer’, which are not possible to include in the limited physical audio spectrum, as it often happens with Paysage D’Hiver. So these two tracks, wherein it seemed particularly clear and intense to me, are a realization of these deeper levels for the first time.”

With 120 minutes playing time, “Im Wald” is not only Paysage D’Hiver’s longest effort so far but also another chapter in the tale of winter travel (thus the French name Paysage D’Hiver) that runs through the project’s entire work like the proverbial golden thread. In the context of his highly detailed narrative, Wintherr locates it after “Steineiche” and “Schattengang” (both 1998) which describe the beginning of the travel, and before “Das Tor” (2013), “Kerker” (1999) and “Die Festung” (1998), which are set at the end.

“Schnee” (“snow”) four-part song cycle was released piece by piece on the compilation LP “Wurzelgeister” (‘Schnee II’, 2002) and on split records with Vinterriket (‘Schnee I’, 2003), Nordlicht and Drudkh (‘Schnee III’ and ‘Schnee IV’, 2017).

The tracks have been partly remixed and wholly remastered for this release.

INFERNA PROFUNDUS RECORDS is proud to present another piece of Baltic black metal history. In Lithuania, the historical black metal trident of the nineties has always been OBTEST, NAHASH and DISSIMULATION – alongside these realities, however, there was another mysterious entity called POCCOLUS. The band has often remained in the shadows of the underground because it did not do many live performances and its discography counts only one full-album, the homonymous “Poccolus”. This black gem released in 1996 is undoubtedly still one of the pillars of Lithuanian metal history. A majestic and epic record, but at the same time veined with a dark melancholy that catapults the listener into the mysterious eras of bloody battles and legends of Baltic mythology. The album “Poccolus” is a rare example of what was the real and genuine “pagan black metal” – no cheerful melodies and alleged vikings with long blond braids chasing dragons in the woods – in this album a hostile and icy shadow reigns looming as a bloody sword after a battle to the death. A raw and icy production does not take away the power and majesty of this work which after almost 25 years manages to be still so evocative and addictive. The album was initially released in CD format by Hammerheart Production and in 2006 re-released by Supernal Music. Now, for the first time finally you can rediscover this dark jewel in double LP version (and digipack CD) which will be released on May 29th, 2020. From the ominous past, through the screams of blood-thirsty werewolves, the charm of distant majestic eras reaches us again …

Archaic layers of string instruments, bells and choirs are intertwined with percussive elements and industrial loops creating an unsettling background atmosphere whilst spleen and bittersweetness form in the foreground.

‘Within the Depths of Silence and Phormations’ is an expedition into the hidden parts of the inner self and is bridging feelings of deep melancholy to blessful joy as it seeks for the true essence of human existence. Original released in 1995 by Cold Meat Industry the album has now been restored, re-recorded and mixed to render the modern standard of sound quality still maintaining the perfect balance between subtle and harsh, dark and pure of the original mix. ‘Within the Depths of Silence and Phormations’ is accompanied with a second disc bringing tracks from various compilations from the period together to form a strong twin album. A unity with double joy: Wallow in the melancholy!
