This GRAVENOIRE debut, forged in the live crucible of rehearsal chambers untainted by modernity’s corroding touch, channels the unsanctioned, unbridled energies of realms both spectral and telluric.

It was but 2020 when GRIEVE emerged from the darkness with their self-titled debut EP. Although otherwise meant to exist strictly in that darkness, it was soon discerned that the band included veritable Finnish black metal royalty within its ranks. Nevertheless, the swiftly uncompromising nature of Grieve was felt: Northern Black Metal Exclusively From the 1990s. No more, no less, no progression, no fun.

The same banner is upheld on Funeral, GRIEVE’s highly anticipated debut album. Aptly titled, Funeral is also the band’s final recording, and a more fitting epitaph one will not find. Recorded in Hell during the diabolical summer of 2021, GRIEVE’s first full-length is a fiercely focused one, solely featuring funereal marches by V-Khaoz and last rites by Werwolf. Beyond cold, utterly grim, violent and restrained simultaneously, Funeral is a record out of time, one where the last couple decades of “black metal” never existed. In fact, it’s not inaccurate to say that GRIEVE’s final strike could’ve been released by Malicious Records back in the mid ’90s, so authentic and impassioned is this vintage obsidian. Suitably for the occasion, mastering was done at Trollhouse Audio, giving Funeral that extra gleam of deathly pallor.

From here on, GRIEVE does not exist anymore. Gather for their Funeral, or just walk on by.

But, obeying only nature and will, GRIEVE have arisen from their own self-imposed grave with the second full-length Wolves of the Northern Moon. “We said we’d end the project for good, but we lied,” state the band about that grave. “We exhumed it.” Indeed, the exhumation also includes a nastiness last found on such Nordic classics as Kronet til konge, Pentagram, Til evighet…, or even Black Thrash Attack. Essentially, then, GRIEVE’s ethics have not changed (nor should they have to), but one can nonetheless find here a pronounced asskicking sensibility that adds further antagonization to trendy ears as well as a noble march to mystical victories. “Eternal Winter, Eternal War”: These Wolves of the Northern Moon are on the hunt – and you’re next!

This GOD-tier split brings forth some of the best material both bands have produced so far, creating an atmosphere of mystery and tension, ranging from death rock to black metal. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s masked masterpiece ‘Eyes Wide Shut’, this collaborative effort goes beyond a regular split of two bands as in some parts of these recordings, the band members appear doing guest vocals in each other’s tracks.

In an effort to most completely document Hades’ early output, “…Again Shall Be” will include the “Alone Walkyng” demo from 1993 in its entirety as bonus tracks, and “The Dawn of the Dying Sun” will include two additional bonus tracks from the era. Is working directly with the band and Jon of Full Moon Productions, who released the original versions, in order to produce the highest-quality reissues to honor the legacy of one of Norway’s most significant black metal bands.

Totaling five tracks in 30 minutes, Trident and Vision is structured in a unique way. Of those five tracks, both HAIL CONJURER and ABSOLUTE KEY have their own respective track; then, the other three tracks are completely collaborative works between both bands. Just as uniquely, the tracklisting alternates these collaborative and solo tracks, making the flow of the record fever-dreaming, unpredictable, and above all, unsettling. While both HAIL CONJURER and ABSOLUTE KEY already skirt the hinterlands of “abstract,” the totality of this record – both solo and collaborative – is further abstracted, stretching to a dangerous limit the already-broad stylistic repertoire of both bands, altogether imparting a worn-out feeling that irrevocably underlines that their creators are far from steady & clear-headed people. Reflective of this shared-yet-still-divergent vision, both bands at the upcoming gig will perform together, creating blackened soundscapes partly planned and partly based on instinct. No light…no hope.
